Sometimes it seems like imprisonment with all the lockdowns and quarantines, if you're a little bored of the reflection period, here's a selection of movies for you to get locked up with and escape the time.
1. Shawshank Redemption
This classic was an adaptation from the Stephen King novel of the same name. Don't be discouraged by the date because Frank Darabont truly does an exceptional job portraying a different side to the prisoners and telling an experience at Shawshank. Centred around wealthy banker Andy Dufresne and contraband smuggler Ellis "Red" Redding, we take a trip through their journey of imprisonment, money laundering and escape while bringing to light underlying issues faced by a broken system.
2. Shutter Island
Starring Leonardo di Caprio and Mark Ruffalo as two US marshals who go to an asylum on a remote island to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of a patient. Things are quick to take a dark turn as thing begin to spiral out of control in their exploration of the catacombs of madness. A peek into the imprisonment of the mind as well.
3.The Usual Suspects
After a seemingly random police lineup, five criminals decide to pull off a three-million dollar heist. The unusual sequence of events is a credit to Bryan Green, who uses this narrative style to his advantage, gripping the audience as they try to understand the lead up to the shooting and the identity of those involved.
4. Prison Break
Admittedly not a film but this series is too thought provoking to not be included. With five seasons altogether, it follows an engineer Michael Schofield who purposefully gets locked up in the same detention centre as his brother Lincoln Burrows who has been wrongfully charged with the death sentence; each stage of his escape intricately planned in the elaborate art of his tattoos. With an unlikely bunch of temporary alliances, they realise the conspiracy actually reaches much deeper than they had initially expected.
